Basics of Spoken English
There’s more to the spoken English language than we get in school, or even in our textbooks. In fact, the more one learns about the spoken vernacular, the more he comes away convinced that it bears more resemblance to the English language than any other.
Now I know there are people out there that disagree with this, but I have a feeling not enough of us realize that it takes more than knowing a certain phrase or knowing where to say something to become fluent in the spoken vernacular.
The spoken vernacular is so important — and it has such a wide range of usages that are not necessarily covered in the school syllabus. People can speak in the vernacular without being fluent in that vernacular. We will also see how it has influenced the English language and the evolution of written English.
There is a lot of English written today that no-one can say.
Most people learn English from textbooks and grammar books. You learn grammar from grammar books. It’s not exactly the spoken language. But you are able to read and write. And you are able to understand how written vernacular works. We saw this with our parents and grandparents: They were able to tell us the same thing about their spoken vernacular.

What is ‘Speak English in Your Life’ then?
At the age of 5 I first got the chance to ‚Speak English in your life‘. It could be called a ‘Bible Class‘ or something similar. Our English teacher was from the north of England and he visited the school for two months. He’d come and tell us stories, take us to the local shops, talk to us about our lives (where to eat, where to sleep etc) and finally he would let us to have a private lesson with him.
After having the talk, the pupils would take their turn to take a turn to speak with him. So at the beginning of the year, it would be a 10-15 pupils for the lesson, where they would be divided in two groups, and one group were told to start at 8 o’clock in the night. Then at around 10 o’clock, the first speaker would start and he always played a bit of music. Then he would tell something about one of his past lives.
And in order to be chosen, you had to tell your story to him and your parents. My English teacher had to take my dad and tell his stories at least 2 times, in order for me to be selected that day. So after telling them many stories, I was told to start the lessons from 9 o’clock.
There were always so many new things, things that I learned everyday from that little story time. I did not have the opportunity to speak English as a native on television or at work as they were not so strict, but I could still improve my English
